General Anesthesia in Dentistry

Dentists most often use mild or moderate anesthesia, which includes nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation.

Nitrous oxide is provided via a mask that rest over your nose. You won’t be asleep, but you’ll feel euphoric and won’t feel any pain. Oral sedation is administered in the form of a pill before your appointment. You’ll feel woozy and may end up nodding off before the dentist is finished treating your smile.

General anesthesia is the highest level of sedation, rendering patients fully unconscious. You won’t feel any pain while asleep or have any memory of your visit. This type of medication is frequently used in hospital settings. For a dentist to provide it, they must have completed special training. An anesthesiologist can also be brought in to assist with the procedure. Your vitals are studiously monitored throughout the session. Since you will feel groggy once you wake up, it’s highly recommended that you have a friend or family member drive you to and from the clinic.

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for general anesthesia. Your dentist will evaluate your case carefully before deciding if this is right for you.
